First things first - click here for the Alpine Trail Map.  Read below for some key tips and information on various ski topics, including Ski School, Getting to Know the Hill, and our Favourite Runs.

Skiing

Ski out, Ski in

A great feature of Sun Peaks is that it consists of three mountains that feed into the Village - there is a lot of terrain to ski!

Here is the modified Alpine Trail Map with some added lines to help show the ski out, ski in options - read further below for the description.  Here is a modified Satellite Map View that zooms in a bit closer with the same ski out, ski in lines as well as locations of lifts and the ski school/kid centre.  You can also check out the other maps on the Maps & Orientation page to get a sense of where things are located.

SKI OUT - Our place is just under 200 metres (650 feet) from the top of the Village - a 2-5 minute walk depending on pace, number of adults vs. kids, and the effects of apres ski.  From the top of the Village, strap on your skis/board and it is a nice slow ride through the Village, hang a slight right at the Coast Sundance Lodge and then you will end up very near to the various lifts - Village Platter, Village Carpet, Sundance Express, and then Sunburst Express.  You will have to do a little skating (and towing of little ones) to get all the way to Sunburst, but it is all pretty easy and straightforward.  Check out the modified Alpine Trail Map or the modified Satellite Map View - we are at the red, hand-drawn asterisk.  Follow the hand-drawn yellow line from there through the Village to the red dot - that is where you ski out to get to the main lifts.  Where you see a hand-drawn purple-coloured line which cuts left from the yellow line, follow purple to get to the Morrisey Platter Lift.  You will have to take your skis off for a short walk over the road and bridge to get there - it is well worth the two minutes - some of our favourite runs are on this side, including Mid-Life Crisis.

SKI IN - There are two main ski in options.  For both you will need to get you and your crew to the Gentle Giant run.  You can do that by taking the Village Platter lift or taking the Sundance Express Lift.  If taking the Village Platter lift (a small poma lift), go right at the top and you will be on Gentle Giant. If taking the Sundance Express Lift, you can go directly to the Rambler run or via the Peek-A-Boo, Three Bears, and Sunrise runs that you can ski off of the Sundance Express that will also get you to Rambler. Once you are on Rambler, you will eventually come out above the Village.  You will see the Sun Peaks Elementary School on your right.  As you ski down and approach the top of the Village Platter and snow tubing area, look on your left for the sign "To Village Hotels" as that is where you take the cut for Gentle Giant to get home.  Then here are your two options once on Gentle Giant:

Option One requires you to turn left at the sign that says "To Village" as you approach the Cahilty Hotel and that basically puts you on the other side of the street from where you started at the top of the Village - less then 200 metres (650 feet) from our place.  This route is the hand-drawn red line on the two modified maps.  You can take your skis off and walk from there or do a little skate-skiing along the sidewalk  back to our place.

Option Two gets you to across the street from our place - if the roads have not been plowed, you can even ski across the street with a very short walk from the top of the driveway.  Basically you keep straight on Gentle Giant and instead of following it all the way for Option One, you exit early and follow a couple of switch backs to end up behind the fitness centre/rink - this route is a bit more adventurous with some weaving and cutting, but that also makes it the preferred option for our kids (15 and 13).

Ski School

For the Sports (ski/snowboard) School and Sundance Kids Centre, follow the Ski Out instructions above (here is the modified Satellite Map View again).  This is basically located beside the Sunburst Express Lift.  If your kids are on skis but relatively inexperienced, be ready for towing them and maybe a bit of walking - budget some extra time, especially on the first day.  An adult can get to Sunburst Express in 5-7 minutes, so add some extra time  to get there with kids.  Our kids have taken lessons there and really liked the instructors.

Insider Trading

If this is your first time to Sun Peaks, we highly recommend taking a Sun Host tour.  It is an amazing way to get to know the hills.  It is free and run by volunteers. They love and know Sun Peaks inside out - they have a tonne of insider tips for all levels of skiers about where to ski and when.  They have a couple of meeting times per day near the Sundance Express Lift.

Favourite  Runs

We have been skiiing here since the 2018-19 season and have some favourite runs.  For context, we are intermediate range, recreational skiers - two adults and two kids aged 15 and 13, with the kids being more adventurous. Of course, conditions and time of season can affect the runs, but we consistently liked the runs listed below  under the Lift you need to take to ski them (there are some great off piste areas, but we have focussed on main runs).

Sundance Express Lift

  • Sundance into Suncatcher

  • Grannie Greene's - a great way to start the day

  • Sundowner - beautiful in the afternoon, as the name suggests

  • Sunrise - this is great first thing in the morning

  • Lone Fir Centre/Lone Fir West - for some tree skiing - our kids love this

  • Three Bears - has something for everyone

Sunburst Express Lift - while here, make sure you go into the Sunburst Lodge for the cinnamon buns - they live up to the hype; you also get to the Crystal Chair Lift from Sunburst

  • OSV - this is where the racers train - get ready to catch some speed!

  • Munro Ridge to Blazer - Munro Ridge is a really good, long run that goes all the way to the Burfield Chair Lift.  If you do not want to go Burfield, make sure you do not miss the turn off into the three runs off Munro Ridge - we really liked Blazer.

  • Trans Canada to Exhibition

Crystal Chair Lift - these are great to do in the morning and there is a beautiful view from up top

  • Blue line

  • Lunch Time - gets you back to Sunburst Lodge

  • Hot Shot

West Bowl T-Bar Lift - this seems to be where the powder seekers go

  • Fall Line

  • Harry's Run

Morrisey Chair Lift (although this takes a few extra minutes to get to, we consistently enjoyed the runs off Morrisey)

  • Mid-Life Crisis - a mix of everything on this run, except moguls

  • I Dunno - as good as its name and kids love everything about it

  • Telly Gram

  • CC Riders

  • Out of the Woods - very scenic
